The motor cleaned up pretty well and I proceeded to install the Gates timing belt kit following Meaty’s Youtube series.
Interestingly, I found the Gates Racing belt to be much tighter than the standard Gates belt I installed on my WRX a few months ago. I ended up needing to remove the “small blue idler” to slip the belt on the drivers side. Once I did that, I was able to easily slide it into place and the replace the idler. Everything lined up just fine and there were no other complications during the install.
